Olivia van Kuiken is an artist you should know. Her paintings are ripe with niche art historical and cultural references that are as interesting to hear Olivia go into detail on as the resulting artworks that they inspire. Able to shift seamlessly from one distinct body of work to the next, Olivia seems to call in a ‘non-style’ of painting from another universe, following whatever through-line of theory is inspiring her in this moment. Coming off of a breakout show this past winter at Chateau Shatto, and with much more coming up the pipeline, it will be hard to miss this rising star.

INSIDE THE STUDIO
If your entire studio was looted, what is the one item you would want to be left behind?
Definitely my computer with all my documentation of previous paintings and my references!
What is the longest stretch of time you’ve spent in your studio and why?
Probably 3 days. The closer I get to a deadline the more time I spend in the studio until I’m there pretty much 24/7. This isn’t to say that without a deadline I don’t go to the studio - but unless there’s an impending deadline I make sure to go home and sleep. If there’s a huge deadline I’ll spend every minute of my time there, bike home to briefly shower and change, and go right back. Probably went 3 days without showering/changing clothes though - pretty gross.
What’s exciting you in your studio right now?
These illustrator reference manuals from the 1980’s they show people in many positions from every single angle and perspective. They’re so weird.
OUTSIDE THE STUDIO
What’s your favorite activity to play hooky from the studio with?
Seeing art definitely.
What is a latest obsession of yours?
To name a few, Barbra Streisand (the memoir), Charli XCX, Chappell Roan, plaid patterns and my cats.
In your perfect world, what is one rule you would implement?
No parking on Myrtle Avenue!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
